What are Contact Adhesives?

Contact adhesives are an incredibly versatile type of adhesive that are commonly used in a wide range of applications, from automotive manufacturing to woodworking. Contact adhesives are unique in that they do not necessarily require any external pressure or clamping to bond two surfaces together, as they adhere immediately upon contact. However, without added pressure it can take longer for a full cure to occur.

Contact adhesives are typically made from a combination of natural and synthetic rubbers, along with a solvent that allows the adhesive to be spread easily over the surfaces to be bonded. When the solvent evaporates, the adhesive forms a strong, permanent bond between the two surfaces.

Good heat resistance

Contact adhesives are also known for their excellent heat resistance and ability to withstand exposure to a range of chemicals and solvents. This makes them an ideal choice for applications where the adhesive will be exposed to harsh environments, such as in the manufacturing of panels or in the construction of boats.

Ease of use

Another key advantage of contact adhesives is their ease of use. Unlike traditional adhesives, which require clamping or pressure to hold the surfaces together while the adhesive cures, contact adhesives bond immediately upon contact. This means that they can be used to bond awkwardly shaped or hard-to-reach surfaces, and can be applied quickly and easily without the need for additional tools or equipment.

What are contact adhesives used for?

Contact adhesives are used to bond a wide range of materials, including combinations of metal, wood, plastic, and rubber. They are commonly used in applications such as automotive manufacturing, woodworking, and construction.

Can contact adhesives be removed once they have bonded to a surface?

Contact adhesives can be quite difficult to remove once they have bonded to a surface. It requires use of a solvent and some hard work. This can make them unsuitable for applications where the adhesive may need to be removed or replaced in the future.

Are there any limitations to using contact adhesives?

One of the most significant limitations of contact adhesives is their tendency to form a very strong bond immediately upon contact. This means that once the surfaces to be bonded have been brought into contact, it can be difficult or even impossible to reposition them. As such, care must be taken when using contact adhesives to ensure that the surfaces are properly aligned before they are brought into contact.

What are some advantages of using contact adhesives?

Contact adhesives have several advantages, including their ability to bond to a wide range of materials, their excellent heat resistance and ability to withstand exposure to chemicals and solvents, and their ease of use. They do not necessarily require any external pressure or clamping to bond two surfaces together, as they adhere immediately upon contact. However external pressure or clamping will increase bond strength and speed of full cure.

Price of contact adhesives

Contact adhesives can cost from 4p / ml.
