What are PVA and Water Based Adhesives?
PVA glue, also known as white glue, PVA adhesives, or carpenter’s glue, is one of the most popular water-based adhesives used for a variety of applications, ranging from woodworking to craft projects. They are relatively low cost, easy to use and safe to handle. Unlike many other commercial adhesives PVA glue doesn’t emit strong fumes making it an operative’s preferred glue.
These white PVA glues are of high quality and work especially well on porous surfaces – as well as porous materials – such as wood, paper, cardboard, and fabric. Our range incorporates PVAs that are suited to all types of craft and handmade activities, whether you are working with wood, tissue paper or pom poms we have a PVA that’s perfect for your application.

Applications of PVA Glue
Woodworking
PVA glue, often called PVA wood glue or PVA wood adhesive, is a high-performance bonding agent designed for wood-related projects. It creates a high bond strength with materials like chipboard, MDF, and plywood, ensuring that joints hold well under pressure.
Craft Projects
For papercraft, craft essentials, and creative activities like papier-mâché, PVA glue works perfectly. Its clear drying property ensures a neat finish without leaving visible glue marks, making it an excellent choice for school glue in craft adhesives.
General Purpose Adhesive
Often referred to as general-purpose PVA glue, this adhesive is ideal for a range of projects, including bonding paper, fabric, and building materials like plaster and masonry. It also works well in bookbinding, where the glue’s neutral pH ensures longevity without deteriorating the paper.
Water-Resistant and Waterproof Options
PVA adhesives come in different formulations, including water-resistant and waterproof PVA for use in humid environments. For example, PVA D3 and D4 wood glues provide purpose-weatherproof wood adhesive suitable for exterior use in bathroom or kitchen joinery projects. These formulations can be ideal for projects exposed to moisture, such as outdoor furniture.
What Is the Difference Between Light and Medium PVAs?
Medium strength PVA adhesives tend to offer you greater resistance and create a stronger bond then lighter PVAs do; however, they can be more challenging to remove from clothing and other unintended surfaces as they can be more of a **washable PVA glue as a result.**
How Do You Apply These Clear PVA Glues?
Applying these PVA glues is really straightforward. For instance, you do not need to use a glue gun, and they can be applied using a simple glue spreader, Brush Cap, or applicator.
Why Choose PVA Glue?
PVA glue is a washable, non-toxic, and easy-to-use adhesive that provides a strong bond on a variety of surfaces. It dries relatively quickly, typically between 30 minutes to an hour, and cleans up easily with water, making it ideal for or as craft PVA glue in craft projects and general-purpose PVA adhesive applications.
Dries clear
Once dry, PVA leaves a clear finish, making it perfect for art projects, craft activities, and detailed work.
High bonding strength
PVA glue is known for its high bond strength, making it suitable for both lightweight and heavy-duty applications.
Non-toxic
It’s safe for use in schools, homes, and workshops, especially around children, and is non-flammable.
Water-based
Being water-based, it’s not only safer to handle but also environmentally friendly, producing lower VOCs compared to solvent-based adhesives.
Available Formats and Delivery
We offer PVA glue in different sizes and formats to suit various needs, from 1 kg bottles for everyday use. For larger jobs, choose from 5 kg bottles or even 25kg tubs for high-volume tasks. Additionally, we offer a variety of delivery options, including free delivery over a certain amount and next-day delivery in the United Kingdom, ensuring that you can always have the adhesive you need on hand for your next project.

For safe, reliable, and high-performing PVA adhesives that meet a wide range of needs—whether it’s bookbinding, school crafts, or outdoor woodworking — PVA glue remains an essential adhesive for every project.
Bonding
One of the main advantages of PVA adhesives is their versatility. They can be used for bonding paper, cardboard, wood, and a variety of other materials. Some grades are ideal for use in applications where a strong, permanent bond is not necessary, such as arts and crafts, bookbinding, and packaging. Other grades are suited to uses requiring a degree of water resistance. A D3 rating is ideal for kitchen and bathroom furniture, a D4 rating is ideal for external furniture.
Easy to use
PVA adhesives are easy to use and clean up, as they are water-soluble. They can be applied using a brush, roller, or spray, and excess glue can be easily wiped away with a damp cloth. They also have a relatively short drying time, typically between 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the temperature and humidity of the environment.
Non-Toxic and Non-Flammable Glues
In addition to their ease of use, PVA adhesives are also known for their non-toxic and non-flammable properties, making them a safer choice for use in schools, homes, and other environments where safety is a concern. They also have low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions, which means they are less harmful to the environment compared to solvent-based adhesives. In addition to being non-toxic our entire PVA range are vegan friendly.
What does PVA stand for?
PVA stands for Polyvinyl Acetate, which is the main ingredient in water-based adhesives.
What surfaces can PVA adhesives be used on?
PVA adhesives can be used on a variety of surfaces, including paper, cardboard, hard and soft woods, chipboard, MDF, plywood and fabric.
Are PVA adhesives waterproof?
No, PVA adhesives are not waterproof and are not recommended for use in high-moisture environments. Unless you specifically select one with a high water resistance such as a PVA with a D4 rating. Whilst not strictly waterproof it has been tested to withstand the EN204 D4 standard offering a high level of water resistance.
How long does it take for PVA adhesives to dry?
The drying time of PVA adhesives can vary depending on factors such as temperature and humidity but typically ranges between 30 minutes to one hour.
Can PVA adhesives be thinned with water?
Yes, PVA adhesives can be thinned with water to achieve a thinner consistency for more accessible applications.
Are PVA adhesives toxic?
No, our PVA adhesives are non-toxic and vegan-friendly, making them safe for use in schools, homes, and other environments where safety is a concern.
Can PVA adhesives be used for outdoor applications?
Yes, there are certain high-quality PVA adhesives that offer D4 water resistance, which are suitable for outdoor use. It is important to make sure that you select the correct grade of PVA, as the grades that are used for craft are not suited for external use.
How do I clean up excess PVA adhesive?
Excess PVA adhesive can be easily cleaned up with a damp cloth or sponge while it is still wet.
Can PVA adhesives be used for laminating?
Yes, clear PVA adhesives can be used for laminating papers and other materials.
How should PVA adhesives be stored?
PVA adhesives should be stored at 5-25°C, in a dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent drying out or spoiling.
Different formulations
PVA adhesives come in different formulations depending on the intended use. Thinner PVA adhesives are often used for bonding paper, cardboard, and wood, as well as in bookbinding or laminating. Thicker PVA adhesives are used for kitchen and bathroom laminates as well as outdoor furniture.
What are the limitations of PVC glues?
One of the limitations of PVA adhesives is their relatively low strength compared to other types of adhesives, such as epoxy or cyanoacrylate (super glue). They are also not recommended for use in high-moisture environments, as they may break down over time.
Overall
Overall, PVA adhesives are a versatile, safe, and easy-to-use adhesive option for a wide range of applications. Whether you are a student working on an art project or a professional bookbinder, PVA adhesives can provide a reliable and effective bonding solution.
