How to Glue Metal to Metal, A Step-by-Step Guide
Getting a strong, lasting bond when sticking metal to metal is all about doing the prep work right.
For instance, rushing the job is the fastest way to a weak joint. So, to help you, here’s a simple guide to get a professional result every time.
Step 1, Safety First
Before you start, make sure you’re in a well-ventilated area. Make sure you are wearing the required PPE – some of these adhesives can be potent stuff.
Step 2, Clean Your Surfaces
The biggest enemy of a good bond is dirt, grease, or rust. Give both metal surfaces a thorough clean with a degreaser.
For really smooth surfaces like stainless steel or aluminium, you’ll want to create a better grip for the glue.
A quick rub with some sandpaper or a wire brush will do the trick. Just wipe away any dust afterwards.
Step 3, Apply Your Metal Glue
Apply the adhesive to the surface. You don’t need to pile it on – a thin, even layer is usually best. For a contact adhesive you will need to apply a thin layer to both surfaces, for all other type of adhesive just a single surface will suffice.
For our two-part methacrylates, gun them out using the mixer nozzles to ensure a thorough mix and spread the adhesive out using a glue spreader.
Step 4, Press and Clamp
Press the two pieces of metal together firmly. To make sure they stay put while the glue sets, it’s best to clamp them. If using the two-part methacrylates don’t clamp too hard, it works best with at least 1mm of coverage. However the two parts do need to be kept constantly in contact.
If you don’t have a clamp, some heavy-duty tape or even a heavy weight will work; just make sure there’s firm, even pressure.
Step 5, Let It Cure
This is the most important step! “Curing” is the time it takes for the glue to harden and reach its full strength.
Be patient. Every adhesive is different, so check the datasheet for the recommended curing time. Don’t be tempted to test the bond too early.
Step 6, Tidy Up
If any adhesive has squeezed out from the joint, it’s best to clean it up before it fully hardens.
The Best Glue for Aluminium and Steel
Not all metals are the same, and choosing the right glue for the job makes all the difference.
So, whether you’re working with lightweight aluminium or tough steel, we have an adhesive that’s up to the task.
Adhesives for Aluminium
Aluminium can be a bit tricky to glue because it naturally forms a thin, invisible layer of oxide on its surface.
For a reliable, strong bond, you need an adhesive that can handle this. We recommend our S1011 Aluminium Epoxy Stick. It’s brilliant for repairs and bonding, as it’s designed specifically for aluminium.
For structural bonds, a toughened acrylic adhesive is another excellent choice.
Adhesives for Steel and Stainless Steel
Steel is a strong, heavy material, so you need an equally strong adhesive.
For bonding steel to steel, you can’t go wrong with a high-strength epoxy or a structural methacrylate adhesive.
Our S1010 Steel Epoxy Stick which is perfect for quick, permanent repairs.
For bigger, more demanding jobs, such as in automotive or industrial applications, our Structural Methacrylate Adhesives will provide you with a rock-solid bond that’s tough enough to handle heavy loads and vibrations.
Industrial Metal Adhesives for Heavy-Duty Applications
For the most demanding jobs, you need an adhesive you can rely on.
Our industrial metal glues are designed for heavy-duty applications where a standard glue just won’t cut it.
These are the adhesives used by professionals in construction, automotive manufacturing, and engineering.
What makes them “heavy-duty”?

They create a permanent metal-to-metal bond that can withstand immense stress and force. - Impact and Vibration Resistance
Ideal for use on machinery, vehicles, and structural components that move or shake. - Chemical Resistance
They stand up to oil, petrol, and other harsh chemicals without weakening.
For applications like bonding structural panels, repairing machinery, or fabricating metal parts, you need an industrial-strength solution. We recommend our Toughened Acrylic and Structural Methacrylate Adhesives.
Overall, they are the choice for professionals who need a bond they can trust.
Waterproof and Heat-Resistant Metal Glues
Sometimes, a metal bond needs to withstand the elements.
Whether it’s rain, moisture, or high temperatures, we have specialist adhesives that won’t let you down.
Waterproof Glue for Metal
For outdoor projects, plumbing repairs, or anything in a damp or wet environment, a waterproof adhesive is essential.
Here, standard glues can fail when exposed to moisture, but our specialist products create a watertight seal.
As a result, our Aqua Epoxy Stick is a fantastic choice, as it’s designed for permanent repairs in damp, wet, or even underwater applications.
Due to this, it’s perfect for fixing leaky pipes and tanks or for use in marine environments.
Heat-Resistant Metal Adhesives
Working on an engine part, an exhaust system, or machinery that gets hot?
You’ll need a glue that can take the heat.
High temperatures can cause many adhesives to soften and lose their strength. Our epoxy and methacrylate adhesives offer excellent resistance to a wide range of temperatures.
For any application exposed to heat, it’s always best to check the product’s Technical Data Sheet (available on the product page) to see its specific service temperature range and ensure it’s right for your project.
